What Video Format Will Suit Your Needs

As technology leaps and bounds in new gadgets, apps and programing, there are several formats for video to consider when having memories transferred. Which format best fits your needs? What will you use to view your video? DVD player, computer, or I-pod? Knowing what equipment you will use in displaying your video will ensure proper display of the video. This is one of the questions our company will ponder when you first contact us with your project.

The first question is: what kind of project can we do for you? We transfer 8mm movies and VHS straight to disc for both DVD/Blu-ray disc format. The maximum information we
can put on a disc is two hours of footage. This will keep the picture and sound quality at its
finest for your viewing as well as listening pleasure.  We can also edit your footage, taking out accidental filming of nothing, the subject filmed is not performing as expected. This is “Dead Air” space. We can also add background music to the video, bringing more life into your memories.

Next, we look into what format to compress the information down to, so we can ensure the best quality disc for you. Different formats fit different devices. Let’s compare the different formats that are available at this time:

•      AVI Video FormatThe AVI video format (Audio Video Interleave) was developed by Microsoft. Videos stored in the AVI video format have the extension .avi. This would make the best format, yet  can only get one hour of footage on it.

•   MPEG Video Format The MPEG video format (Moving Pictures
Expert Group) is the most popular format on the Internet. It is cross-platform, and supported by all the most popular web browsers. Videos stored in the MPEG video format have the extension .mpg or .mpeg. Better format for picture and audio quality reproduction.

•   MP4 FormatThe MP4 video format (MPEG-4 video format) is a
moving picture compression standard which is used for internet, broadcast, and on storage media. Good format and can contain more info. Can be compared
to LP speed on VHS recordings in picture/audio quality. One can store more than two hours of footage.

•   Windows Media Player VideoVideos supported by Windows
Media Player. Windows Media Player is a digital media player and media library application
developed by Microsoft. Good format. Same qualities as MP4.

•   QuickTime VideosThe QuickTime format is developed by
Apple. QuickTime video format is a common format on the Internet, but QuickTime movies cannot be played on a Windows computer without an extra (free) component installed. OK format. The picture quality is severely diminished to play on DVD and Blu-ray players.

•   Real Video Format The Real Video format was developed for
the Internet by Real Media. The Real Video format allows streaming of video (on-line video,
Internet TV) with low bandwidths. Because of the low bandwidth priority, quality is often reduced. Bad format. Good only for the above applications.

•   Shockwave Flash VideoThe Shockwave Flash format was developed by Macromedia. The SWF video format requires an extra component to play. This component comes preinstalled with the latest versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer. Bad format and only good for the above applications.”

This might better explain what formats are out there, and what equipment they work best with. These formats work well with both DVD and Blu-Ray discs. As you can see, there is not much difference between the popular DVD disc to the present contender of Blu-Ray disc.

From looking at the simple explanation in the graph above, we can see that one difference between DVD and Blu-ray is the storage capacity of the disc. DVD can hold 60GB of information while the Blu-ray can theoretically store over 200GB of information. This is one advantage in Blu-ray disc being able to store more information. The Blu-ray disc can play in the Sony X-Box as well. That makes the X-Box versatile in playing game discs as well as video discs. Blu-Ray disc can hold almost four times the amount of information as a DVD disc.

Another advantage of Blu-ray discs is the introduction of 3-D movies. The
Blu-Ray disc, being capable of higher capacity (theoretically storing up to
200GB of information), is better suited to handle all the information encoded on the disc. The downfall is you need a special player, television and glasses that need batteries. While 3-D is still in its infancy, the industry is waiting to see if it survives its formation on the market, from the big screen at the theater to viewing at home. DVD came out with the first 3-D movies on disc. They came with paper glasses with blue and red lenses for viewing at home. As Blu-ray was developed and 3-D began with its new look on the big screen at movie theaters, Blu-ray jumped on the 3-D band wagon, and has taken over 3-D disc market. “That format we haven’t seen available for home use yet, but we are keeping up to date on when that may happen. Blu-ray is well on its way to becoming a defacto video format, and has enough flexibility to adapt to the needs of a 3-D Hollywood” (Dreuth). 3-D might become the next media in home entertainment, as games are being introduced in
3-D and not requiring glasses. There are 3-D cameras on the market at present. The models require a special convertor that fits on special cameras. Our company is watching the progress of this media, but do not offer it at this time. That may, however, change in the near future.

Another format is the Real Video format. That is better suited for I-Pod viewing or viewing from a PC or laptop on the internet. With a smaller file, this format is better for streaming video on-line. It works better on smaller screens like PCs, newer cell phones, and I-Pods. Real Video is not a good candidate for being on a disc. Once a video formatted to this format, it can not be reversed into a larger format. Doing so can result in poor video and audio qualities in the finished product.

As we have seen, there are a few factors in making a disc, whether it is DVD or Blu-ray. These considerations combined with communication, will guarantee you memories, be turned into a beautiful restored production. We can produce your video directly on the DVD or Blu-ray disc.
